There are use-cases for every new technology, it’s up to us to find the use-cases for distributed websites.
Here’s what we did so far:
Today we’re announcing two new big projects: Almonit Dweb Portal and Almonit Add-on.
Almonit Dweb Portal
We released a Dweb (decentralized web) portal.
It should be your Dweb landing page. It’s the decentralized site you go to in order to find where to go next.
The portal is actually a website directory. It’s updated regularly with new websites.
All the links in the portal are .eth links. How do you access those links? Well, for this we made the Almonit add-on.
Almonit Firefox Add-on
Trust us, we’re objective (right).
What is the add-on for? Well, very simple: it lets your visit decentralized websites.
So if you visit
almonit.eth without the add-on, you’ll see get an error message. But if you visit it with the add-on, you’ll get a beautiful website. Simple, right?
The add-on has some extra small features:
In decentralized websites the Almonit Address Bar will be hovering on top of the website.
Have fun playing with it:-)
You can use it for navigation, move it around the screen, or even minimize it if you want.
The add-on has a popup window. Use it to find new decentralized websites
You can access the settings page via the popup.
We aim for maximum decentralization. In the settings page you can choose which Ethereum and IPFS gateways to use.
By default, the add-on refers you some IPFS gateway. In order to remain as decentralized as possible, it will refer you to a different random gateway each time you restart the browser. We call it, “decentralization via randomization”.
We also aim for maximum privacy. The add-on functions without communicating with us. It does communicate with gateways, but you can reconfigure that in the settings.
The only communication you may have with us regards the usage metrics. The default is not to share your metrics, but we ask for your agreement to share it upon installation. If share your metrics with us, we integrate those into our statistics, and then delete all data that may identify you.
